Zanesville, Ohio- A non-profit organization is raising awareness for mental health.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness will host Family-to-Family, a program set to educate family members or friends of individuals suffering with mental illness. The free classes will start Monday, March sixth from six to eight thirty and run every Monday for twelve weeks at Trinity United Presbyterian Church. Local President of the National Alliance on Mental Illness explains the importance of learning about mental illness.

“One of the things people don’t realize is when you get a diagnoses of a mental illness it doesn’t come with a manual. You don’t know how to proceed. I know my family was lost for about five years when my brother was diagnosed with schizophrenia.”

Quinn notes a few topics individuals will learn through the classes.

“Participants will learn communication strategies that they might be able to talk more effectively with their loved one with a mental illness. We’ll go through exercises; they can have the experience of talking down someone who might be in a crisis situation. ”

To register for the class you can call 419-709-5838.
