Cannelville suffers from heavy storms

CANNELVILLE, Ohio- Severe storms wreaked havoc across much of Muskingum County, but one community expected the flooding.
Cannelville saw some of the worst flooding throughout the county, a reocurring problem for the area. With significant rainfall, the water levels from the nearby creek rise and spill over into the town.
Robert Murray is a 10-year Cannelville resident and said this is something they prepare for anytime there’s considerable rainfall.
“You have to pay a lot of attention to the big creek and as soon as it gets close to the top of the banks you got to really be aware and be ready to leave in a heartbeat,” said Murray.
In previous years, Murray said he’s experienced over a foot of water surrounding his house from this same situation.
“Every time we get a severe thunderstorm we get some water, but when we get a real bad one we get bad floods, every time,” said Murray.
According to Murray, Cannelville residents have complained multiple times about the creek, but he said it falls on deaf ears.
“You know it’s part of life down here, other than keeping our own portions of the creek clean and free of debris, there’s not much else we can do. Unless the state or the county does something its just going to continue and continue until something really bad happens and someone dies,” said Murray.
Since Wednesday morning’s flooding, Roseville officials have put a floodgate up across Cannelville Road as a precaution for the rising water.
