Muskingum County K-9 Adoption Center Dog of the Week; Meet Venus!

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – This week’s dog of the week is a young pup with a lot to learn and a lot of love to give.

Meet Venus. She’s a 6-month-old terrier mix who does well with other people and dogs. As K-9 Adoption Center volunteer Doug McQuaid explains, she’ll have a lot to learn when she gets to her new home, but a good routine will help her learn quickly.

“As you can tell, she loves affection and would be a great dog to sit in your lap. But with a dog like this she is starting, basically, strictly from scratch. So you’re going to have to basically teach her all of her commands. We just put a leash on her today. So we’re trying to get her to learn how to walk beside of you. So, just the normal things of every day that a family would go through with a pup like this, you know, from teaching to go outside to go to the bathroom,” McQuaid said. “Routine is strictly the way to go. Dogs learn very quickly and very easily with that.”

McQuaid took a moment to highlight the need for volunteers at the adoption center, where you can spend time with dogs like Venus and help play matchmaker.

“Our numbers are kind of getting high and we talk about this a lot of how much and how important volunteers are. Just like Venus, dogs come in as strays that we know nothing about. You’re able to let us find out all the great things about our pups, which makes it a lot better when we have customers come in,” McQuaid said. “The first question they want to know is what do you know about that dog. So naturally we want to be able to give them all the answers we can and try to match them with the best dog with their family.”
