Big Fish is ready to make waves at West Muskingum High School

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – If you’re in the mood for a musical this weekend, West Muskingum High School has the show for you.
Big Fish is a musical based on a novel and 2003 film of the same name, where a son learns about his dying father’s life through the tall tales he tells. The show features a wide cast of students who were eager to take the stage and bring this story to life.
“I like how different he is from myself as a person. I like to think that I’m a happier, more energetic person and he’s very, he’s to the point. He’s put together, he’s matter of fac,” said Jase Agin, a senior who plays Will Bloom.
Jase Agin has been a part of three shows at West Muskingum and his character is the son learning about his father. The son is a journalist who looks for the truth behind the exaggerated tales that his dad tells.
“I’ve actually gotten advice from the woman who played her on Broadway. I contacted her through social media and she got back to me. And that has been the coolest part, being able to take someone who knows a lot about what they’re talking about and put that into my performance as an actor,” said Sarah Whetstone.
Whetstone is a junior who plays Sandra Bloom, Will’s mother. Whetstone has been a part of 5 productions at West Muskingum and several others in community theaters.
The director of the show, West Muskingum Choral Director Josh Whetstone, says the students have done a fantastic job on a production that addresses serious subject matter.
“Don’t miss this one, because this one is going to be so emotionally moving. I think everyone has a little bit of this story in them and if they open themselves to it, they can be really moved in a positive way,” Josh said.
Lucas Stant is a senior who plays the role of the father, Edward Bloom. Stant has been a part of 3 productions at West Muskingum and loves the musical numbers in this performance.
“I’ve gone really deep into the role, I think, and it’s really touched me and made me think about, you know, the type of person I want to be in my life and it’s definitely made me think about the people that I know and sort of how I want to be when I’m older,” said Stant.
Showtimes are 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are $14 for adults and $5 for those 18 and under. You can purchase your tickets ahead of time by clicking this link.
