ZANESVILLE, OH – April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and a local group is encouraging the community to speak up and support survivors.

The Domestic Violence Coalition is hosting its annual Speak up, No More Silence event on April 9th. The event aims to raise awareness about sexual assault and provide education and resources for those affected.

“We are finding out that there are way too many people that are being sexually assaulted, especially as children. Then, when they get older, it comes back in flashbacks or dreams. Maybe they’ve never dealt with the situation, they’ve never had closure, or they’ve never taken that person to court and held them accountable. So, I think it’s important for people to know they can still do that.” Domestic Violence Coalition Co-Chair, Dorothy Thomas said.

Organizers say the program will feature multiple speakers, including a sexual assault survivor. Food will also be provided to those who attend.

“We’re going to have speakers talk and a survivor speak. We’ll have some literature on the tables for people from different agencies to provide different references for them.” Thomas said.

The event runs from 11:30 am to 1 pm at the Zane Sate College Campus Center. It’s free and open to the public.
