ZANESVILLE, OH – Scammers are sending fake DMV text messages that look official and demand quick payment. The Better Business Bureau says knowing the warning signs can help you stay protected.

These phishing texts often claim you have unpaid traffic fines and threaten penalties if you do not act immediately. The message may come from unfamiliar phone numbers and include links that appear legitimate but lead to fraudulent websites.

“They’re saying that either your registration is passed due, that you have a traffic ticket that’s been unpaid, or you have a toll service fee that hasn’t been paid. Sometimes these notifications that you receive through your text have a great deal of information. They may have a ticket number, court date set, or information about your registration that is actual verified information. So, they look very real.”  BBB Central/Southeastern Ohio President and CEO, Judy Dollison said.

Experts say consumers should avoid clicking suspicious links. Instead, check the state’s official DMV or BMV website or give them a call. You can also delete the message and report it by forwarding it to 7726 or though the BBB Scam Tracker.

“If you do get a text like this, never click the link. Don’t respond to the text at all. If you think it’s real, call the Bureau of Motor Vehicles and confirm that there really is a problem before you take any more steps.” Dollison said.

The BBB encourages residents to stay cautious, report suspicious texts, and help raise awareness about these growing scams.
