Household Hazardous Waste Collection

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – Many residents acquire hazardous chemicals, cleaners and fuels that are deemed as too dangerous to be thrown away.
Southeastern Ohio Joint Solid Waste Management District’s District Coordinator Mike Reiter announced an event that allows people to dispose of their hazardous household waste items, free of charge.
“This Saturday, May 9th, from 9 to 2, we’ll be putting on a hazardous waste collection, household hazardous waste collection for all the residents of Muskingum County. Included in that, you can bring our paints, your pesticides and all chemicals. There’s a long list of things that we do accept. The website will have a list of those. You’ll go to wasteabate.org or call our office at (740) 732-5493. And we can walk you through what we do accept this Saturday,” Reiter said.
The collection will be held at the Ohio University Zanesville parking lot and Reiter asks that you enter from the traffic light entrance on Newark Road and follow the directions of the traffic attendants.
“Our contractor Environmental Enterprises takes all the materials back to Cincinnati to their main facility to be recycled and properly disposed of or incinerated. These are items you do not want in the waste stream, in the waterways. This is the one opportunity for people to get rid of things that cannot be thrown in the trash. And it is free to the residents of the waste district,” Reiter said.
The Southeastern Ohio Joint Solid Waste Management District provides various free collection and recycling events throughout their six county region. This Saturday’s Household Hazardous Waste Collection is the first in Muskingum County since 2023.
