A Fortress From Allergens

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – Spring can be a very discomfortable time of year for those who suffer from allergies.

Advanced Heating and Cooling Services Home Comfort Specialist Drew Williams shared some ways that allergy sufferers can make their homes less irritating.

“I think what you are finding is that people are spending more time inside their homes, anymore,” Williams said. “A lot more people are working from home, so comfort inside that space is paramount these days. I think that with people being at home more often, they notice that their indoor air quality has maybe not been as great as they always thought it was. So they are trying to find ways to make it better.”

Williams recommends making sure your windows and doors seal tightly and that furnace and air conditioning filters are changed on a regular basis. He also suggested paying attention to the filter’s MERV ratings, which indicate how finely it filters the air.

“We recommend, if you can, an 11 to 13 MERV rating,” Williams said. “But you only want to do that if you have one of the more efficient, thicker filters here. The four to five inch filters. If you do a MERV 13 on a one inch filter, it’s going to be more restrictive and can actually create more issues with airflow, causing larger problems for your heating and cooling systems. So if you are wanting to get into that higher MERV rating on your air filters, you want to make sure that you’re in the four to five inch thickness on that filter.”

Furnace manufactures specify the proper filter dimensions that should be used and filter manufacturers specify their filtration rates. If you have any questions about your home’s air quality, you can contact Advanced Heating and Cooling for an in home consultation.
