Eight Muskingum County students receive a $10,000 scholarship

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – Muskingum County students were awarded $10,000 scholarships to pursue higher education.

The Muskingum County Community Foundation (MCCF) celebrated eight recipients of the John and Susan (Rose) Dorr Scholarship on Thursday. Trent Pines is a nephew of the Dorrs and the scholarship committee chair. Pines says he almost gets as excited as the students when it comes to awarding the scholarship.

“I would say that one of the most exciting things for me, not only getting to see all these extremely talented kids, is the fact that, one, they are planning on returning and giving back,” Pines said. “And then, honestly, the joy. The real exciting part is when you get to hand them that check, and they get to see that they won $10,000. I mean, it’s over the top from an emotional standpoint for me. I kind of get wrapped up in it with the kids and think ‘wow, this is big.’ So this is kind of exciting.”

One of the recipients of the award is Zanesville High School graduate and University of Cincinnati student Chloe Buchanan. This marketing major says she shares the Dorr’s love for Zanesville and appreciates the opportunity this scholarship brings.

“College is also a big kinda financial burden and it’s getting more expensive and this was just a way to help me and my family. I feel very touched and honored to be a recipient of this,” Buchanan said. “I just love the generosity of Dorrs and how they’re able to help, just with future endeavors and help with my future endeavors. So I just feel really honored and I really want to take their values with me and be able to withhold those throughout my life.”

John and Susan (Rose) Dorr established their scholarship as a way of giving back to the community that helped them achieve their dreams. You can contribute to the scholarship fund or apply for other scholarships by visiting the MCCF’s website.

Other 2026 recipients include Abigail Balsley, Braxton Brownrigg, Chesney Carter, Cassidy Hines, Owen Larimer, Madison McConnell, and Hannah Slack.
