Tips to Keep this Summer Safe

COLUMBUS, OH – Well it’s Memorial Day weekend and while many will pay tribute to those who gave it all, it also marks the unofficial start to the summer season.
With pool parties, lake days, BBQ’s, and other activities, one thing people may overlook is safety.
Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff, the Director of the Ohio Department of Health, says one thing many people forget about is reapplying sunscreen.
He recommends a sunscreen with at least 30SPF and to reapply often.
“Wear protective clothing such as wide brimmed hats and UV blocking sunglasses.” Dr. Vanderhoff said. “To avoid heat exhaustion or heatstroke, stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water and avoid caffeine and alcohol which can actually add to dehydration.”
He also recommends checking in on elderly loved ones or neighbors, especially if they live alone, as they can be the most vulnerable to the extreme temperatures.
If you are planning a lake day or pool party, water safety is also something you should keep in mind.
“Nationally, drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death in children ages 1 to 4.” Vanderhoff said. “Watch the water, keep a close eye on kids, and avoid distractions, drownings can happen quickly. When boating make sure everyone is wearing a lifejacket and to avoid food borne illnesses, take these precautions at cook outs and picnics. Keep cold foods below 40 degrees and don’t leave them unrefrigerated for more than 2 hours, use a food thermometer and cook meat to a safe temperature, that’s 160 degrees for ground beef and 165 degrees for poultry.”
