Teen Driver Safety in Focus This Summer

ZANESVILLE, OH – Summer is here and the Ohio State Highway Patrol is reminding teen drivers to make safety a priority.

The period between Memorial Day and Labor Day is known as the “100 Deadliest Days” for teen drivers. Troopers say crashes involving teens tend to increase during the summer months as more young drivers spend time on the road traveling, hanging out with friends, and heading to summer activities.

“Schools are out, young kids are out, and there’s a lot of people vacationing during this time so the traffic volume’s a lot higher than normal. That increases risks for injury and fatal crashes.” Sgt. Kyle Shirer with the Zanesville OSHP said.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol says distractions like cell phones and extra passengers can quickly become dangerous behind the wheel. They’re encouraging drivers to stay focused, slow down, and always wear a seatbelt.

“The Highway Patrol wants to make sure people wear their seatbelts. Obviously, no distractions, no phone usage, and obviously drive sober.” Sgt. Shirer said.

Making safe choices behind the wheel can help prevent crashes and keep Ohio roads safer during the busy summer season.
