OUZ HEAT Camp Inspires Future Healthcare Workers

ZANESVILLE, OH – Future doctors, nurses, and healthcare heroes got a hands-on look at the medical field today at Ohio University Zanesville.
Ohio University Zanesville hosted its Healthcare Exploration and Training, or HEAT Camp, for incoming 7th, 8th, and 9th grade students interested in healthcare careers. The one-day event allowed 24 students to step into the world of healthcare through simulations, lab activities, and interactive experiences with local professionals and educators.
“Students across Muskingum, Coshocton, and Licking counties have come together to explore possible health careers. During the morning, we focus primarily on nursing, in the afternoon some professionals from Genesis will bring teams and allow the students to explore occupational therapy, laboratory services, and pharmacy.” Christy Watson, Professor of Nursing, said.
The camp is designed to spark curiosity and build confidence in young students interested in the medical field. Students were able to ask questions, try new activities, and get a closer look at what a future in healthcare could look like.
“The goal of course is exploration of healthcare. It allows the students to dabble in a little bit of everything. You put your toe in there and do some hands-on activities to see which route you want. You can think ‘is this really what I want or maybe I’d like to seek a little more into that avenue.’ Partnering with Genesis has made that possible also to increase those possibilities for students to get options.” Assistant Professor of Nursing Instruction, Teresa Polen, said.
OUZ says the HEAT Camp was a success and they plan to continue bringing the event back in the future.
