Students Honored at Local MLK Breakfast

Martin Luther King Junior once had a dream that all men would one day be treated equal and Monday several area students realize their dreams of high education.

30 students from five different schools were presented scholarships at this year’s Martin Luther King Junior Breakfast for their hard work in the classroom. It’s the largest group of students for the award.

"I want to go to college," said Morgan student Jade Norris. "That’s going to help out a lot."

While some don’t know where their college adventures will take them they look forward to the challenge.

"Getting new experiences, getting college experience, meeting new people, getting new friends," said Zanesville High School student Jordan Newman.

This year’s breakfast’s theme was ‘Reaching Higher with Education" featuring Zane State, Ohio University Zanesville and Muskingum University.

"This is a wonderful celebration of Martin Luther King and diversity and what Martin Luther King Junior stood for, for equality for all people, so for an educator that’s what we are all about," explained Dr. Paul Brown president of Zane State College.

Awarding these scholarships ensures that Doctor King’s legacy lives.

"These students weren’t around when Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King was doing his civil right work, so it’s a way to introduce them to him and let them know it’s because of what he did, but we recognize and have a new appreciation for Martin Luther King," said Carlotta Workman event coordinator.

Congressman Zack Space also presented each student a letter of accommodation and Zane State, OUZ and Muskingum University also presented scholarships to a student or students on their campuses.
