ZANESVILLE, Ohio – The Zanesville-Muskingum County Chamber of Commerce is inviting local businesses to enroll in the Safety Council Program.

The Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation has partnered with the local chamber of commerce to hold monthly meetings to discuss safety strategies and access resources and training. Dana Matz is the president and CEO of the Zanesville-Muskingum Chamber of Commerce, and he shares his biggest takeaways from attending Safety Council meetings.

“One of the big things I took away was the preparation and the training of your employees in case of an accident. So there’s a lot of preparation that goes into safety instead of just responding to an accident. It’s preparing if you have an accident, how to prevent the accident, and the most common accidents are very common, in that they are slips, trips, and falls,” Matz said.

The Zanesville-Muskingum County Safety Council meetings are generally the fourth Wednesday of the month at Eagle Sticks with hot breakfast served. Matz says that the benefits go beyond learning how to keep the workplace safe and prepared in the event of an accident. There are also monetary and social motivations to sign up for the program.

“Another advantage is participating businesses can receive up to a 3% rebate on their workers’ compensation costs for participating in the set number of meetings. Which is 10 meetings per year, and it’s a great opportunity to begin to learn about safety in the workplace, network with local safety professionals, and save some money,” Matz said.

You can visit the Zanesville-Muskingum County Chamber of Commerce’s website to sign up for the safety council program. The cost is $250 per person and you do not have to be a member of the chamber to enroll. The deadline to enroll is Sept. 30.
