CANTON, Ohio – For many, the Ohio Athletic Conference Media Day at the Pro Football Hall of Fame serves as the symbolic kickoff to the football season.

At the annual meeting of coaches, players, and media members, the Muskie football team was voted to finish in the bottom half of the league. The coaches poll had Muskingum slated to finish in ninth place out of ten teams. The media was a little more friendly, voting Muskingum in 8th place.

Muskingum returns 22 lettermen from last year’s 4-6 team. That was the best record for a Muskie team since 2011.

The roster features seven seniors, including wide receiver Damon Jones. The Pomeroy native lead the team with 467 receiving yards last season and he said he doesn’t put too much stock into the preseason polls.

“It’s just a number. At the end of the day everybody has their opinion throughout the world. Me and my guys, we’ve got a whole different mindset and we’re going to let people think what they want. But once Saturday happens they’re going to change their mind real quick,” said Jones.

The Muskies open fall camp on Aug. 11 and they kickoff the season on Sept. 2 against Waynesburg at home.
