Joan Cox Shaffer

Joan Cox Shaffer, age 91, of New Concord formerly of Zanesville, passed away, Sunday, August 20, 2017, surrounded by her loving family at Beckett House in New Concord, following a long illness..
She was born Monday, October 12, 1925, in South Wales, England, the daughter of Henry Morgan Cox and Mable Cox. Joan was a British war bride coming to the U.S. in 1946 on the Queen Elizabeth. She made many wonderful friendships with other war brides. She enjoyed the British Girls get together and 4 o’clock tea time with Fran Gray, Hazel McDonald and Daphne Bradshaw. Joan enjoyed being with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, knitting, playing the piano, camping and working in her flowers. Joan loved people and people loved her, she was a kind and giving soul and was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church. She was married to William T. Shaffer who preceded her in death in 1996.
She is survived by four children; Michael J. Kosco of Zanesville, Joseph Kosco of Crooksville, William D, (Susan) Shaffer of Claysville, and Colleen (Raymond) DeGarmo of Zanesville; 11 grandchildren, Gina ( Mike) Harms, Jeff (Rita) Kosco, Kenny (Ruby) Kosco, Cindy (Joel) Lewis, Lisa (Mike) Bowman, Jodie Rixie, William (Emma) Shaffer, Braden Shaffer, Michael Shaffer, Brian Thomas, Brad (Trisha) Moorehead and Jennifer (Jesse) Hitt, and 8 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by two daughters-in-law, Margaret Kosco and Shirley Pride; and one brother Joseph Cox.

Friends may call from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Wednesday, August 23, 2017, at the Hillis, Combs & Nestor Funeral Home, 935 Forest Avenue, where a prayer vigil will take place at 7:45 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will he celebrated 10:30 AM on Thursday, August 24, 2017, at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, 925 East Main Street Zanesville, with Father Martin Ralko as celebrant. Burial will conclude in the Mt. Olive Cemetery, Zanesville.
