Ohio State Highway Patrol Reminds Drivers to Drive Safe While Sharing the Road with School Buses

ZANESVILLE, OH – As students head back to class, the Ohio State Highway Patrol is reminding drivers to hit the brakes when they see the big yellow bus.

The Zanesville Post is reminding motorists to stay alert as school buses return to the roads. When a bus is stopped with its red lights flashing or stop arm extended, drivers on a two-lane road or a road with a center turn lane must stop at least ten feet away in both directions. On roads with four or more lanes, only drivers traveling in the same direction as the bus are required to stop.

“We want to remind motorists to be mindful of school buses. Watch out for their lights and allow time for those buses to stop and give yourself plenty of time to stop as well.” Sgt. Kyle Shirer with the Zanesville OSHP said.

The reminder comes as thousands of buses begin carrying students again across Ohio.

“Pay attention to the road. Don’t be distracted. And drive at a reasonable speed limit and wear your seatbelt.” Sgt. Kyle Shirer said. “I mean we want everyone to get to where they need to be safely. We want school buses and kids to get to school safely. By watching out for school buses, make sure you’re not passing them.”
