Dr. Paul Showengerdt

Carl G. Schowengerdt, M. D. died at 10:50 P.M. on Thursday, August 20, 2026 at Primrose Retirement Community of Zanesville. He was born on April 12, 1931, in Chicago, Illinois, the third son of his late parents, Charles Wesley Schowengerdt and Laura Ruth (Coughlin) Schowengerdt. He was preceded in death by two older brothers, Paul Mitchum Schowengerdt, of Jefferson City, Missouri, and Rev. Louis Wesley Schowengerdt, of Dallas, Texas. He is survived by one remarkable sister, Carol Ann Auchard, of Oskaloosa, Kansas, and four precious children, Paul Eric (Andrea) Schowengerdt of Dewitt, Michigan, Charles David (Bryan) Schowengerdt, of Tucson, Arizona, Janet Lynn Schowengerdt of Madison, Wisconsin, and Jessica Rosa (Christopher) Power, of Atlanta, Georgia. He leaves behind two grandchildren, Annabelle Jane Schowengerdt and Elizabeth Mae Power.

Dr. Schowengerdt obtained a B.A. degree from Central College, Fayette, Missouri in 1953. He registered as a conscientious objector for the Korean War and did alternative service from 1953-1955. He was assigned to the Psychiatric Institute of Independence Iowa, where he served as a psychiatric aide, and became interested in the field of medicine. He obtained required basic science courses at the University of Iowa in 1955, then entered the University of Iowa College of Medicine from 1956-1960, obtaining his M.D. degree. He served an internship at the University of Cincinnati from 1960-1961, then a residency in general and thoracic surgery at the University of Cincinnati from 1961-1967. After that residency, he remained at the University of Cincinnati as an Assistant Professor of Surgery, as well as Chief of Surgery and Associate Chief of Staff for Research at the Cincinnati Veteran’s Administration Center. In 1973, he left the university to join his colleague, Malcom W. Lentz, M.D. in private practice at Chillicothe, Ohio. In 1983, he went to Ohio State University for an additional year of training in cardiac surgery. After that training, he came to Zanesville, Ohio, to practice thoracic and vascular surgery. He retired from surgery in 2004, and then formed a not-for-profit corporation, Appalachian Primary Care, whose purpose was to provide medical care for uninsured and poorly insured patients. After the formation of MVHC in 2007, Dr. Schowengerdt and his employees merged with MVHC in 2008, since they were serving the same purposes. He continued to work at MVHC, providing adult medicine and pain management care, until April 2021. He was the initial recipient of the Chuck Hunter award at that institution.
Dr. Schowengerdt contributed 21 original journal articles to medical literature. He formed a publishing company, Y-City Publishing, LLC, in 2003, to self-publish three books on morals, ethics and religions, available on Amazon.

The Remembrance and Celebration of Life Ceremony will be held from 5:00 P.M. until time of service starting at 6:00 P.M. on Monday, August 24, 2026, at BOLIN-DEIRKES FUNERAL HOME, 1271 BLUE AVENUE, ZANESVILLE.
