Zanesville, OH- A local railroad club is celebrating a major milestone this Halloween weekend.

The Zane Trace National Trail Model Railroad is marking 50 years with an open house, giving visitors a chance to explore its detailed layout, see new additions, and take a look back at the region’s railroad history. The event runs October 31 and November 1 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 24 South Sixth Street in downtown Zanesville. Visitors can also check out historic films and photos highlighting railroading in Zanesville, Dresden, Trinway, and Roseville, including never before seen 8mm film footage.

“Christ’s Table, which we’re right next door, is letting us use the dining room Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., same hours as the show, we’ve got memorabilia, historical stuff, there’s a gentleman that has 8mm film of around here when there was still steam engines,” said ZTNT Treasurer Rick Gooden.

The layout is a highlight featuring illuminated cities and intricate details that bring the railroad scenes to life. Gooden says the lighting is one of his favorite parts of the project.

“It’d be nice if they could come up and see it, we’re in the process and have been in the process to be able to shoot video of this with all the lights off, because of how much lighting we have done on the lay out, I mean the cities are lit, all these things are lit, and that’s one of the jobs I like to do,” said Gooden.

Admission is free, but donations are appreciated. Anyone interested in joining the club or learning more can speak with a member during the open house.
