Visual and musical art collide at the upcoming Muskingum Valley Symphonic Winds concert

NEW CONCORD, Ohio – Visual and musical arts come together for a Sunday concert at the campus of Muskingum University.
The Muskingum Valley Symphonic Winds open their concert season with a show titled Music in Your Mind’s Eye: An Art and Music Collaboration. They’ll take the stage at 3 p.m. on Sunday accompanied by some visual art that was created through cross-campus collaboration.
“My colleague, John Drubel, assistant professor of art and design, has gathered some of his students to create some abstract paintings to go along with the music that we are performing. They took an afternoon to listen to the pieces, not knowing the inspiration, why they were written, and then have created six different, one for each piece. And, they did this as a group,” said David Turrill, the music director for the Muskingum Valley Symphonic Winds.
The six pieces will be on display at the Louis O. Palmer Art Gallery at Muskingum University and will be sold through a silent auction. The funds raised will be split between the Art & Design and Music programs. Turrill tells us more about the free Sunday evening event.
“So, they’re going to be on display at the concert and after the concert, they’re going to have a chance to kind of talk to the audience about the thought process and their creative process and what went into their decisions they made with colors and shapes and such. So yeah, it’s a little different for us. It’s going to be really, really great to bring some arts together,” Turrill said.
Music in Your Mind’s Eye will take place on Sunday at 3 p.m. in Brown Chapel on the campus of Muskingum University. The concert is free thanks in part to public funds from the Ohio Arts Council, but donations will be accepted.
