ZANESVILLE, Ohio- Towing companies have seen an increase in calls due to the below freezing temperatures.

The below freezing temperatures, for more than a week, has resulted in slicker driving conditions and more dead batteries. Clever Towing mechanic Billy Pickrell said it has been a very busy season for the company. He said the way to make sure that you are not needing roadside assistance, is routine car maintenance.

“Keep your fluids maintained and go to your local part store or come here to Clever’s and we can check your battery, make sure your battery’s good. Check your tire depth and make sure you got good tread on your tires,” said Pickrell.

He said flat tires, due to extremely cold temperatures, and dead batteries are some of the most common calls. If your car is having trouble starting up, it’s possibly due to having a nearly dead battery.

“Slow cranking, it could have a slow crank to the starter or your lights could be dimming out. But I mean there’s several different things but mainly it’s just slow cranking is the cause of a dead battery,” said Pickrell.

Pickrell said a battery life is usually between three and five years. With the cold temperature, it is important to have your battery tested to make sure you don’t end up stranded.
