Girls are officially a part of Cub Scouts

ZANESIVLLE, Ohio- January 15th marks a massive change in the Boy Scouts of America as the first group of girls in the area have joined the Cub Scout Program.
There were four girls from Coshocton that picked out their uniform as they are now officially part of the Cub Scouts. Cub Scouts was founded in 1930 for younger boys. B.S.A. voted to allow girls to participate last October and Council Commissioner Arv Palmer said it’s a long time coming.
“I saw a lot of girls that wanted to do this program that were denied the opportunity and I felt that it was a disservice to them. I saw a lot of girls that deserved to be Eagle Scouts, that were denied that opportunity just because of their gender,” said Palmer.
Chip Udischas is an eagle scout and now he gets to see his daughter, Alexis, be part of the Cub Scouts. He said his family has always been a part of the cub scouts and now everyone can officially be included in Cub Scout events and teachings.
“I was a cub master for five years, quite a while ago, and my daughters were coming to the events with us but they couldn’t do anything. They couldn’t join the boys on the advancement side of things. They saw the boys getting recognized for the same stuff they did but, got nothing for their efforts,” said Palmer.
In 2019 Boy Scouts will be fully open to both boys and girls so, girls will have the opportunity to become an Eagle Scout.
