ZANESVILLE, Ohio- It’s Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday and many schools and businesses are closed across the country in observance of his legacy with many celebrations going on here at home.

This morning the Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Fund Committee hosted its 24th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Prayer Breakfast at North Terrace Church of Christ.

“One of the reasons for the prayer breakfast in addition to recognizing those students is to help people understand and honor the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King in all that he did, not just for minority students, but for humanity,” said Carlotta Workman, the Co-Chair of the Scholarship Fund Committee. “So this is a great way to acknowledge him and his accomplishments, but also to allow people to come out and participate in the honoring of our Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King.”

Workman said Dr. King was a big supporter of education and the committee strives to continue that legacy by supporting minority students pursuing higher education opportunities. The Scholarship Committee Fund awarded 19 students from high schools across Muskingum County with scholarships to purchase books for school. Philo High School senior Madeline Wilson said the award will help her as she begins school in the fall.

“Personally, it makes me breathe a little bit more knowing that I’m supported. And it also kind of makes college more imminent, but not in a scary way. That I know it’s coming, but I’m ready for it,” said Wilson.

Workman said if Dr. King were here in Zanesville today he would be proud of the way the community works together towards a common goal to do good in the city.
