Indians to abandon “Chief Wahoo” in 2019

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Major League Baseball and commissioner Rob Manfred announced on Monday that the Cleveland Indians will remove the “Chief Wahoo” logo from their hats and jerseys beginning in the 2019 season.
Chief Wahoo has been used by the Indians since 1947, but the logo has come under increased scrutiny over the past several years because of it’s racial undertones. While the Indians have already decreased the usage of Chief Wahoo on hats, jerseys, and merchandise in recent years, and adopted their new “C” as the team’s primary logo, Wahoo will be abandoned for good following the upcoming season.
The Indians will host the MLB All-Star Game in 2019. and it is believed that commissioner Manfred wanted the team to eliminate the usage of Chief Wahoo prior to Cleveland hosting the mid-summer classic.
Chief Wahoo may not be the only thing to go as well. Many want Cleveland to change the team’s “Indians” nickname as well, but it’s reported the team has no plans to change their team name at this time.
