Buckeyes beat the rain as Gray tops Scarlet

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State had to move up the start time for Saturday’s spring game due to weather concerns, but the rain held off just long enough for the Buckeyes to complete all four quarters as the Gray team topped the Scarlet side 37-14 Saturday afternoon.

Among the concerns about the weather heading into Saturday morning, questions remained about the Ohio State quarterback position; how would the coaches use the three candidates in the glorified practice? Who would separate themselves from the group? And who will be under center when they open the season next fall?

And while there weren’t any decisions made about the position on Saturday, head coach Urban Meyer indicated that decisions need to be made, and will be made, over the coming weeks.

“We’re going to have some very good meetings, and some productive meetings. I want to see all the statistical data that we’ve charted everything, and go from there,” Urban said.

All three quarterbacks played for both the Scarlet and Gray sides on the afternoon. Dwayne Haskins, who many felt had the upper hand on the competition heading into the off-season, went 9-19 for 120 yards and 2 touchdowns. Burrow, the quarterback considered to be Haskins biggest competition, completed 15 of 22 attempts for 238 yards and 2 touchdowns, while the youngest of the group, Tate Martell, went 5 of 16 for 28 yards. Though Martell had the most successful day of any of the quarterbacks running the ball, rushing 11 times for 74 yards.

And while the quarterbacks may have been a bit out-of-sync due to a lack of rhythm, their job wasn’t made any easier by throwing to the second group of receivers for much of the afternoon.

While Parris Campbell caught 4 passes for 40 yards early in the game, Terry McLaurin , Johnnie Dixon, and Austin Mack combined for just one reception, while K.J. Hill didn’t even play due to minor injuries.

After the game, Meyer discussed the continued development of wide receiver Binjimen Victor, as well as youngster Jaylen Harris.

“Vic, I kept him in there because he just has to keep getting better. And Jaylen Harris, when he gets tired, like a lot of athletes, they just aren’t very good. But he had some plays today and he’s had a very productive spring. I imagine he’s very close to being in the rotation,” Meyer added.

And while Ohio State has to replace several departures on the defensive side of the ball, Urban praised the off-seasons of defensive leaders Dre’Mont Jones and Nick Bosa.

“Nick Bosa, we got him out of there because he’s had an excellent spring. The guy that’s probably had the best spring of anybody on our team is Dre’Mont Jones. He was outstanding this spring. For a guy to come back, when a lot of people thought he should leave…he had a great spring. And if he continues his development he could be one of the best in America at what he does,” Urban praised.

Ohio State will now get a big of a break as coaches hit the recruiting trail and players get to rest before fall camp begins in July. The Buckeyes will open their season on September 1st when they host the Oregon State Beavers at The Horseshoe.
