Protecting Pets from Fleas and Ticks

Ticks and fleas can be dangerous for our furry friends year round but even more so during the summer months.

According to a new study released by Merck Animal Health, 33 percent of pet owners said they don’t give their pets regular flea and tick treatments.

Experts said flea and tick protection is key for all cats and dogs year round.

“There’s a lot of different products out there. A lot of amazing products now that can almost last three or four months of tick and flea prevention,” said Animal Shelter Executive Director Jody Murray.

Fleas and ticks can spread serious illnesses to pets including lyme disease, which can be fatal to four-legged friends.

The Animal Shelter said they can help pet owners who may not have a vet.

“We have a wellness clinic Wednesday afternoons that we can help with if someone doesn’t have a local vet,” explained Murray. “We also do spay and neuter 4 days a week here so if anyone has any questions they can contact us here at the shelter.

To keep your animals free of infestations you should check them regularly and remember indoor pets are just as much at risk as outdoor pets.
