UPDATE on fire hydrant hit on Maple Avenue

Hydrant

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – The Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a one-vehicle accident that happened Tuesday morning.

Around 5 a.m., they received reports of a semi truck clipping a fire hydrant, which caused a huge stream of water to go into the air. The truck reportedly attempted to turn into the Donatos Pizza parking lot on Maple Avenue, but took the turn a little too short.

“I think there was minimal damage done to the truck, there was no injuries and it’s really more of an inconvenience than it was for anything else mainly for the city,” explained Sheriff Lutz.

The fire hydrant was leaking for over 4 hours and the city estimated 10 feet of water was drained from the tower. It was Zanesville City’s waterline, but because of how the county lines are ran, the Sheriff’s Office took over the accident report.

“We will be doing an accident report,” said Sheriff Lutz. “I’m not sure if he’ll be cited or not, but he will be showed at fault in the accident report for doing the damage to the fire hydrant.”

The fire hydrant was shut off around 9 a.m. and repairs were made throughout the day. Sheriff Lutz said some flooding did occur, but he’s unsure what businesses were directly affected.
