Corning Explosion Under Investigation
A small explosion in the Village of Corning is under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
It happened last Thursday on State Route 13, while construction crews were digging for a sewer line.
Shane Cartmill from the Fire Marshall’s office says while the case is still under investigation they believe that an underground storage tank or tanks left from an old gas station may play a role in the case.
While the tanks pre-date the current underground storage tank rules, the State Fire Marshal’s Bureau of Underground Storage Tank Regulations will work with investigators to determine if a fuel release occurred or if contaminated soil is present.
If that is the case the State Fire Marshal will try to determine who is responsible for the contamination.
