Bone & Joint Awareness
During this time of year, when many of us are turning our attention toward Halloween’s decorations, costumes, and candy, some local health officials are asking that you festively look at your own skeletons as well.
It is Bone and Joint Awareness Month, and an issue that Orthopaedic Associates of Zanesville Physician, Dr. Karl Saunders, says affects many of us.
"If you look across the country, it’s the number one reason people visit their physician, about a muscular-skeletal concern-either a bone or joint problem, can be injury or otherwise. It is really one of the number one issues in healthcare today, " says Saunders.
Saunders says the reason there are so many bone and joint injuries is because we are in motion daily.
"We have about 206 bones in our skeleton surrounded by muscles and tendons, and virtually every movement we make requires use of those, " says Saunders.
Saunders says some of the most common bone and joint injuries deal with sprains, strains, fractures, and wear conditions.
He says in order to keep your bones and joints healthy, people need to watch their weight, not get involved with fad diets, have plenty of calcium and vitamin d in their diets, and exercise.
