***UPDATE*** Nashport Fire Ruled “Suspicious”
Fire officials are saying Saturday night’s house fire near Nashport has "suspicious origins".
Fire crews were called out around 10:30 Saturday night to a home near the intersection Winter Wood Drive and Welsh Road. Witnesses say they could see flames shooting through the roof from a mile away.
"When we got here, I arrived with the first truck, it was fully engulfed and the occupants we found out weren’t inside. They had evidentially moved out in the last day or so and it was basically sitting empty," said Muskingum Township Fire Chief John Benson.
Benson, a team of investigators and the State Fire Marshall’s Office re-visited the home Sunday morning. They say the fire is of a "suspicious origin" and are investigating the cause. Though the home is a total loss, the majority of furniture and valuables were moved out a few days before the fire.
