Marine Corps Marks Anniversary

Tomorrow is a big day for those who are serving or who have served in the Marine Corps.

It marks the 234th anniversary of the Corps. Retired Master Sergeant Richard Bowers says the birth of the corps wasn’t celebrated until 1921.

"Every year on Nov. 10, Marines around the globe celebrate the birthday of the Corps," he said. "It was founded on Nov.r 10, 1775 in Philadelphia, Pa."

Bowers says in 1921 General Lejeune ordered a celebration in November and for the last 88 years, that’s what they’ve done.

"The birth of the Corps will be celebrated each year with a formal ceremony," he said. "That’s done every year. The Marines dress in their dress blues and the ladies in their gowns and it’s a formal affair. They have a cake cutting ceremony where they wheel the cake in and they cut it with a sword."

Bowers says throughout the month of November, areas all around the country will celebrate.

He says Zanesville had it’s own celebration last week.

Bowers says the ceremony is an emotional one the marines enjoy participating in.
