Hot! Hot! Hot!

Heat-related illnesses can be a sneaky thing. Here are some things to know if the heat starts to get to you.

The first type of illness that heat can bring about is more of a warning sign to your body.

"The first part comes with the excessive sweating and you may be thirsty if you don’t keep yourself well-hydrated you’re going to get dehydrated. You may need to eat some salty potato chips and drink some Gatorade also," says Dr. Vicki Whitacre, Health Director at the Muskingum County Health Department.

With excessive sweating, Dr. Whitacre says it’s important to replenish lost electrolytes. Heat stroke is a more severe form of heat exhaustion, and action must be taken immediately following symptoms.

"Those that are in great difficulty, not able to sweat, hallucinating, they need to be cooled as quickly as possible with maybe some cool water, get them to an emergency room or to some kind of health car as soon as possible," says Whitacre.

Dr. Whitacre says that if someone is suffering from heat stroke or exhaustion and they are not removed from warm conditions, there is a risk of death.
