Flag Ceremony Honors Fallen Soldier and His Brother
A special ceremony was held Monday night to honor a fallen soldier, and his brother.
Out of seven brothers, Glenn Jones was the youngest to serve in World War II. On June 6, 1945 he was killed in Okinawa, and a flag was given to his family. That flag has remained in a cedar chest for more than 60 years and was never properly folded. Now the family wants the oldest living brother, Dale Jones, to have it along with Glenn’s Purple Heart.
"We’re having the flag brought here to be folded in honor of my fallen brother that was a Marine, and I wanted the [Marine] people to fold it and to have my picture taken with that flag being folded," says Dale Jones.
Dale Jones served in the United States Navy from 1940 to 1945. He is honored to receive the flag that recognizes his brother’s sacrifice.
"My emotions are starting to take over now. You know, you think about those things and your heart hurts you know for all the people what was lost in honor and to save the country. That’s the reason why we’re having the flag ceremony in honor of both of us, but mostly for him," says Jones.
Dale was joined by numerous members of his family who were there to support him during the flag ceremony at the VFW in Zanesville.
