Seniors Two Stepping to Stay Young

As dancing shows become more and more popular, we are learning it really is a great way to stay in shape for every age.

The Center For Seniors at Sunrise  is keeping seniors active through dance and other activities.  Activities Supervisor Carol Morgan is the certified instructor for the arthritis exercise program. She says it’s important to exercise even if you have arthritis.

"It’s building that muscles strength and toning and thats what helps out with the arthritis. If our muscles are stronger they are less likely for it to get worse," Morgan said.

Dancing is not only a fun way to work out your muscles but it works out your brain too.

"It keeps your mind alert as well because we have to remember the dance steps and it keeps our bodies stronger and toner as well as our minds. So it just slows down the aging process," Morgan said.

Morgan said seniors can build muscle but they have to pace themselves.

"You start out as slow as you can and you don’t push yourself more than you can but each time I find that they push themselves just a little bit longer and maybe do one more and the next thing you know the are getting stronger," Morgan said.

She said it’s great when they come to her and say they can climb the stairs better because they’ve really build up their muscles. Plus staying in shape helps ward off heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.
