ZANESVILLE, Ohio – The John Earhart Scholarship was awarded for the first time to a local student hoping to make a difference.

Kassandra Settles received the $500 scholarship and said it means a lot and will help her get through school with less stress. It will help her pay for school and for her books at Ohio University Zanesville.

“So I’m going to Ohio University Zanesville at the moment. I am double majoring in social work and psychology and I’m thinking about doing like the corrections road like I want to start my field placement next fall in a corrections setting,” Settles said.

She said she is so excited to be the first person to receive the scholarship. Peg Earhart, the wife of John Earhart, decided to donate money in his name and focus it on social work.

“Well he was a minister here locally for many many years but he had a real heart for helping people and I’m a social worker, he married one, so he tried through the church to meet the needs of all people not just those who might be coming on Sunday morning,” Earhart said.

Earhart said the reason the scholarship is for social work is so someone could be blessed and could continue on helping others. You can learn more about the John Earhart Scholarship on the Scholarship Central website.
