20th Anniversary of John Glenn’s Return to Space

NEW CONCORD, Ohio – The John and Annie Glenn Homestead in New Concord hosted a celebration on Monday, October 29th.
They celebrated the 20th Anniversary of John Glenn’s return to space. They invited the community to join them from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and tour the museum as well as witness a presentation about the history of what led to this event.
Bev Allen, President of the Museum said “this is an event, obviously the 20th Anniversary of a man who at age 77, not only went into space but met every test and every criteria that the young me and women on that flight had to meet.”
Allen said this was a celebration not only of someone who came from New Concord but also someone who had a bit of age on him. Mary Ann DeVolld, Museum Volunteer, said John Glenn wanted this museum and his story to be used for educational purposes to help students.
“I think it means a lot more to me now than it did then. Thinking about who John Glenn was because as a volunteer here I’ve gotten to study more about his life and his family and how important this community was,” DeVolled said. “So the person that he was is because of where he grew up.”
DeVolld, who at the time was teaching at John Glenn High School, got to attend the launch in person with two of her students who were apart of the school newspaper.
