ZANESVILLE, Ohio – Through the holiday goods and parties, you should still enjoy the holidays with balance and moderation.

Medical Director at the Zanesville-Muskingum County Health Department, Dr. Jack Butterfield, explained the different ways you can stay healthy even through the temptations of overindulging. For example, limiting the amount of high sodium foods you take in. Secondly, too much sugar is always an issue this season because of all the desserts. A brisk walk will help burn off some of this sugar. Lastly, alcohol goes with partying especially with the new year, so plan to get lots of sleep and eating healthy as soon as possible.

“Also, I would suggest regular exercise. And eating a normal diet as soon as you can, after the partying season is over,” said Butterfield.

Dr. Butterfield said the most important reason to stay healthy is because it is also cold and flu season.

“If you allow your health to get worse, to deteriorate, you are going to place yourself at a disadvantage. And things such as overindulging, especially with alcohol which can impair your immune system, can place you at risk,” Butterfield added.
