Scams Targeting Senior Citizens

The number of scams are growing in our area and they are targeting certain groups.

The Center for Seniors at Sunrise is spreading the news about scams and how to prevent the elderly from becoming a victim. Southeastern Ohio Legal Services managing attorney David Little said one of the biggest issues is the number of scams there are for quick money.

"I think the most notorious would be the Nigerian scams where they send some kinda of money ask the individual to deposit it in the bank and then  write a check on it as they are told to do by the scammers and then that check bounces and people loss their own money," Little said.

He said the banks fall for it too. They need to screen these checks and deposits better. He’s said the harm this does to seniors especially on a fixed income is incredible.

He said anytime you get offers from a stranger you should be extremely skeptical and if it sounds too good to be true it usually is.
