Beloved Muskie Coach Passes Away
Earlier today Muskingum University lost one of their most beloved coaches. Donna Newberry passed away at the age of 58 after battling breast cancer for the third time. Newberry was the leader of a softball program that has amassed 900 plus wins, 18 O.A.C. titles, and the school’s only National Championship in any sport.
Newberry arrived on the Muskingum campus in 1974, fresh off earning her master’s degree from Ohio University. In her 36 years at the school she created a legacy that is unmatched by anyone. She won her 900th game last season at Marrietta and lead the Muskies to another OAC tournament appearence. Newberry also guided the Lady Muskie Basketball team to 401 wins and a NCAA final four berth in her time. While at Muskingum she was in charge of the intramural athletic department for non-student athletes and was an accomplished professor.
Newberry had the Muskingum College Softball field named in her honor earlier this fall.
