Black Star Girl in Town

Author, career woman and single mother Marva Stith visits the John Mcintre library this afternoon to discuss her recently published book on African American life in the 50’s and 60’s.

Her book Black Star Girl is the story of Stith’s life and her close relationship growing up with her father and some of the hardships they faced being African American. After her father passed away at a young age, she wanted her children to hear stories about him.

"I could not get my children to sit down or stand still and let me tell them about my dad and how hard he worked and his teaching that got me to where i was going" said Marva Stith.

Stith grew up in Zanesville with eight brothers and sisters. Her father had plans to be a businessman. His ambition encouraged her and she began writing book ideas down in 1976. It was published in 2009.

"I feel wonderful that the book is published. from the first moment that my copy came to me I was so happy because I am not a young person and i was afraid it was not going to happen" said Stith.

She feels the book can benefit students of all ages including those who may not know what life was like prior to the Civil Rights Movement
