Keeping Kids in School

At times it’s hard to get a child to think further then the day ahead.

When it comes to education students may not see a need for it now, but it becomes important later in life.

"Students see the day for the day," explained Keep Kids in School’s Cassandra McDonald. "They really don’t look into the future because the future looks unsure. We want them to know that they’ve got back up and we care."

To raise funds for Keep Kids in School a benefit dinner and concert took place at Bryan place. The money raised will go towards a weekly summer program at the library to mentor students.

"During the summer statistics show they lose as much as 6 months of schooling as far as their reading ability and comprehension level," said McDonald. "It just goes out the window with the summertime and the wind so we want to at least keep that commitment there."

And to encourage those that never finished school the John McIntire Library and McDonald will hold a one day college course for those that don’t have their GED. The hope is it will inspire them to finish school. There’s also a chance to become eligible for a $500 scholarship to attend Ohio University Zanesville.
