Leota Maria Dunn (April 3, 1920 – July 22, 2014)

Leota Maria (Hayes) Dunn, 94, passed away peacefully on July 22, 2014. She was born April 3, 1920 in Dresden Ohio to George & Bernice (Bagent) Hayes.
Mrs. Dunn graduated from Cambridge High School in 1938. She served her country during World War II as a true “Rosie the Riveter†– she was employed as a sheet metal worker at Goodyear Aircraft in Akron where she helped build the FG-1D Corsair, the premier Navy and Marine fighter plane of the time. She returned to Zanesville and worked at the Hoover Plant assembling detonation devices until the last day of the war. She then worked at Mosaic Tile where she met her husband Charles “Pete†Dunn and left the work force to raise her two children. She later returned to work at National Cash Register in Cambridge until her retirement in 1985.
Following her retirement Leota set to work serving the community. For many years she met her goal to make 100 lap robes a year and distributed them to the residents of local care centers during the Christmas season. Until her recent illness she was known for the multitude of crocheted shawls and scarves she made and donated to her church’s Prayer Shawl Ministry. She also volunteered at The Carr Center and was a member of Coburn United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Dunn is survived by her children, Terry R. (Laura) Dunn of Zanesville, and Bernice “Bernie†(Frank) Anderson of Baltimore, OH; grandchildren Hannah Dunn of Columbus, OH and Marlayna and Brayden Dunn of Zanesville, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Leota is preceded in death by her husband
Charles “Pete†of 45 years, whom she cared for during his lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s disease, sisters Louise Riggle and Ruby Terril and brother Leroy Hayes.
The family would like to thank the kind staff and nurses of Cedar Hill Care Center and Genesis Hospice who cared for her and supported them in her final days.
Visitation will be held from 6pm to 8pm, Thursday, July 24, 2014 with funeral services being held at 11:00am Friday, July 25, 2014 at the Bryan & Snider Funeral Home with Reverend, Dr. Dennis Baker officiating. Burial will follow at Zanesville Memorial Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests that contributions be made to the Coburn United Methodist Church Prayer Shawl Ministry or Genesis Hospice & Palliative Care in Zanesville, OH.
