A Dance Studio Says Goodbye

A legenday Zanesville dance instructor has died.

Dance teacher Marjorie Holzchuher-Sellers passed away Monday night. She was 95. Marjorie began teaching dance at fifteen years old, after spending time dancing in New York she returned to Zanesville where for the last 80 years she touched the lives of thousands through dance. She also regularly appeared on WHIZ TV with her students doing dance routines.

Trudy Cultice was a student of Marjorie’s for 49 years. She was by her side when she passed, "She could have easily danced on Broadway, she could have easily been a rockette, she could have easily been in movies, danced with Fred Astaire, I mean she was truly a classic beautiful dancer easily she could have gone on to something else and chose to stay here."

For the last fifty years Butch Thiesen taught alongside Marjorie at the studio on 7th Street.

"I spoke to Butch this morning and we’ve talked to him all along since she’s been ill. He plans to carry on her legacy as long as he possibly can right here in this room," said Stephani Gillespie-Shirer, a student of Marjorie’s for 38 years.

Marjorie danced in her last recital this past May.

Calling hours will be this Friday, July 27th from 2-4 p.m. and again from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Hillis and Hardwick Funeral Home on Forest Avenue. The funeral will be Saturday at eleven.
