ZANESVILLE, Ohio – As the nation’s birthday quickly approaches, many events have been scheduled to celebrate the occasion.

One of those America themed events is a free concert that will be performed Wednesday at The Center, by the Schubach Big Band.

“This week is the beginning of the Schubach Big Band, Straker Concert Series,” Schubach Big Band Composer David Schubach said. “And we’re starting with a lunch concert, which is unusual. We’re going to be at The Center, which is formerly the Senior Center, across the street from the Secrest Auditorium, at 11:15 in the morning, for about an hour. It’s free and open to the public thanks to the Straker Foundation. So we hope a lot of people will show up, especially the business people downtown, looking for something different to do at lunch.”

The 17 piece band plays a variety of popular music that ranges from the 1940s to current cultural favorites. The band performs several events throughout the year with a list of singers that usually vary between concerts.

“We’re going to be playing music of the golden age, the big bands, especially Glenn Miller, World War II things, and patriotic songs of course and some novelty songs,” Schubach said. “I get the biggest kick out of especially young people that haven’t heard a big band and think it’s going to be something grandpa might fall asleep in the easy chair to, and no, it’s exciting, it’s loud, it’s… We play rock and roll, we play big band music, we play pop songs they’ve heard.”

Wednesday’s concert will take place 11:15 a.m. at 160 North Fourth Street and feature Misty Connor, Tim Vance and Bob Skidmore carrying the vocal assignments.
