A Song For Hope
ZANESVILLE, Ohio – Wintertime provides the perfect excuse to take a moment to enjoy an indoor music concert, while supporting a worthy cause.
The Muskingum Valley Symphonic Winds will be performing a free concert this Sunday at Muskingum University with all donations going to support cancer research and the Genesis Cancer Care Center.
“This is a really exciting concert on Sunday, the 23rd,” Muskingum Valley Symphonic Winds Music Director David Turrill said. “It’s called a ‘Song for Hope’ and it will function as a cancer benefit concert and a cancer awareness concert. We’re actually dedicating it to cancer survivors and fighters. So the music selected kind of ranges the whole spectrum of emotions that one might have on a cancer journey.”
Attendees can expect to hear brass, woodwind and percussion instruments performing a wide variety of sounds from upbeat and lighthearted to heavy and dramatic; with cancer survivor testimonials spoken in-between the musical performances.
“I’ll talk about a couple of the specific works,” Turrill said. “One is called ‘Stages,’ by Brian Balmages and it was written for somebody who was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. We’re also doing a tune called ‘A Song of Hope,’ which was written for Ryan Anthony, who was a professional trumpet player, who was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2012.”
The concert will take place 3 p.m. Sunday, inside Brown Chapel on the Muskingum University Campus, located in New Concord.
