Adams Street Shooting
ZANESVILLE, Ohio – Zanesville police officers were dispatched to a shooting that took place on Adams Street early this morning.
Zanesville Police Department Detective Sergeant Phil Michel discussed some of the details surrounding the crime that was gathered from the officers who responded to the scene.
“Right around 3:50 Tuesday morning, Zanesville Police Department received a 9-1-1 call in reference to two masked men entering this residence,” Michel said. “Witnesses would describe that an argument had ensued and that one male was shot. 50-year-old Benjamin Hanning had been shot. He’s currently at Genesis Medical Center. He had undergone surgery. Right now, we have detectives on the way up there to go speak to him to try to piece together the details of why this happened.”
Michel added that the injuries were serious and a tourniquet was applied by officers at the scene to prevent extreme blood loss.
Investigators believe there was a connection between the victim and the suspects and intend to interview the victim once he’s safely finished with the surgery.
“I believe it’s an isolated incident,” Michel said. “I don’t believe there’s any safety concerns for the neighbors at this time as far as any random acts of violence or anything like that. I believe that this was a targeted situation and that’s what we’re looking into and try to build the case from there.”
Michel noted that the suspects remain at large and the investigation remains open. Anyone having any additional information surrounding the crime is encouraged to call the Zanesville Police Department at (740) 455-0700 and ask for Detective Keck.
