ZANESVILLE, Ohio – This afternoon the Zanesville American Legion awarded scholarships to help lessen the burden of going to college.

12 area students were awarded checks Tuesday evening from the American Legion. Those who received the scholarships are from the Southeastern Ohio area and must have a family member in the American Legion. Larry Wheeler with the Legion said this year they did something special for the recipients.

“It’s been very rewarding for me,” said Wheeler. “We decided to do it this way this year. In past years we just mailed the checks. This year we thought it would be nice to have a reception and honor those that have received the scholarships.”

The 12 students receiving scholarships attend a variety of Midwestern colleges. Wheelers said with how much college costs it’s gratifying to be able to help them.

“I understand having gone to college myself. I understand that they money can be a problem,” said Wheeler.
