DAR to Hold Picnic for Veterans
ZANESVILLE, Ohio – The Daughters of the American Revolution will be hosting their annual veterans picnic at noon this Friday inside the American Legion on Third Street.
The picnic allows the organization to show their appreciation to those who have put their lives on hold to serve our country and it also gives veterans the opportunity to socialize and swap tales.
“Our veterans picnic has been going on now, I’ve been in DAR now for 15 years. At least 10 years, I remember of having a picnic that I’ve been involved with it. And our veterans picnic a few years ago, The Veterans Appreciation Foundation approached us about joining up with them for our picnic. The last few years, really made it into a weekend, where we’re the kickoff on Friday with the big picnic. They have their breakfast at the Barn on Saturday and on Sunday they have their golf scramble,” Muskingum County Daughters of the American Revolution Chapter Regent Jennifer Luallen said.
Luallen wasn’t sure of how many veterans attend the free luncheon but noted that they go through 200 hamburgers and about 100 pounds of macaroni salad every year. She said veterans should just follow the crowd right in and ask about the picnic.
“Our picnic is well known. We have our hamburgers, speaking of hamburger, a cheeseburger. We have our baked beans and our infamous macaroni salad that is homemade as well. Watermelon, chips, It’s a full lineup of food as you come in. And we always say, if you leave hungry, there’s definitely something wrong because you haven’t came in to get your seconds,” Luallen said.
The DAR and Veterans Appreciation Foundation’s annual veterans picnic will begin serving at noon, this Friday, July 18th, at the American Legion Post 29, located at 27 South Third Street in Zanesville.
