Anti-Bullying Event to Help Area Students

More than 500 third through fifth graders got a lesson in a serious issue plaguing schools around the nation.

One in four students nationwide report being bullied during the school year and kids at Larry Miller Intermediate School learned how to empower each other, stop bullying, and deal with issues in school. Principal Mike House said he hopes the students take the positive messages from Thursday and use them in the future.

“We’re hoping that when students get in situations on the playground or the school bus, they can remember the things that they’ve been taught and dealing with situations a lot of times students don’t know how to react when they’re in certain situations so we’re hoping that, as students, [they] learn from ‘Ice Man’,” said House. “They can talk to other students when they get in situations. They can talk to adults about their problems.”

Special guest ‘The Ice Man’ helped students learn about social issues by asking students to encourage him while he performed physical feats like ripping his ‘book of bad choices’ in half and even lifting student volunteers like weights. House said that teachers will be using messages from today when dealing with bullying in school.

“We can refer back to this assembly and the things that they were taught so that they can use the things that they learned,” said House.

The day also served as ‘Super Hero Day’ and students got to dress in their favorite super hero’s attire.
