Katie Ledecky earns AP female athlete of year for 2nd time
A change of scenery worked out just fine for Katie Ledecky. The American swimming star shifted coasts and coaches after last summer’s Tokyo Olympics. The cross-country move led to another stellar performance at the world championships and a pair of short-course world records. Now, Ledecky has been selected as The Associated Press Female Athlete of the Year for the second time. She first won the award in 2017. This time, Ledecky edged out American track star Sydney McLaughlin by getting the nod based on a first-place votes tiebreaker. Basketball standout A’ja Wilson finished third in the balloting.
Raiders bench QB Carr, will start Stidham for final 2 games
HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — Las Vegas Raiders coach Josh McDaniels said on Wednesday that Jarrett Stidham will start the final two games at quarterback in place of Derek Carr. McDaniels cited the struggles of the offense over the past month as the reason for the switch. McDaniels also said defensive lineman Chandler Jones and linebacker Denzel Perryman were placed on season-ending injured reserve. Jones has an elbow injury and Perryman a shoulder injury. The Raiders host the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.
McDaniel: Tua suffered concussion in loss to Packers
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa sustained his second concussion of the season in last week’s loss to Green Bay, Miami coach Mike McDaniel confirmed Wednesday. Tagovailoa’s status for the rest of the season isn’t known, and the Dolphins are preparing for Sunday’s pivotal game at New England with Teddy Bridgewater as their starter. The NFL and the players association have launched a joint review of the application of the concussion protocol.
Analysis: Doncic, Jokic set the pace; wild MVP race looming
Luka Doncic had 60 points and 21 rebounds and 10 assists on Tuesday, a stat line never seen before in NBA history. Nikola Jokic had 41 points and 15 rebounds and 15 assists on Sunday, a stat line that was managed on only two other occasions. Two amazing games. Also, they combined for zero dunks. The two best players in the NBA right now do not play with LeBron James’ strength and force, or with Michael Jordan’s acrobatic creativity. Doncic and Jokic do it differently. They dominate by making the game get played at their pace. And right now nobody does it better.
Duke contains Plumlee, beats UCF 30-13 in Military Bowl
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Riley Leonard threw for 173 yards and ran for two touchdowns, and Duke wrapped up an impressive first season under Mike Elko with a 30-13 victory over UCF in the Military Bowl. The Blue Devils have won four consecutive bowl games, although this was their first appearance in one since 2018. Jordan Moore ran for a touchdown in the first quarter, and then Duke took control in the second. UCF lost three of its final four games this season. John Rhys Plumlee managed only 28 yards passing in the first half and 182 for the game.
Suns All-Star Booker out at least 4 weeks with groin strain
PHOENIX (AP) — Phoenix Suns All-Star guard Devin Booker will miss at least four weeks with a left groin strain. The team confirmed Booker’s injury on Wednesday and said he’ll be re-evaluated after the four weeks. The 26-year-old Booker has missed six of the past nine games because of hamstring and groin ailments. He tried to return for the team’s Christmas Day matchup against the Denver Nuggets but played just four minutes before having to leave the game. He is averaging a career-high 27.1 points per game and already topped 50 points twice this season.
Pelé nears 1 month in hospital with no sign of improvement
SAO PAULO (AP) — One of Pelé’s daughters says she and her family are enduring moments of sadness and despair as the 82-year-old Brazilian soccer great’s hospitalization nears one month. The three-time World Cup winner’s cancer has advanced and doctors at Albert Einstein hospital recently said he’s under “elevated care” related to “kidney and cardiac dysfunctions.” Pelé was admitted to the Sao Paulo facility on Nov. 29. The hospital hasn’t published any updates in the past week. Kely Nascimento says on social media “These moments are hard to explain. Sometimes it is a lot of sadness and despair, in other moments we laugh and speak about fun memories.”
Georgia’s Bennett needs 2 wins for rare back-to-back titles
ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett needs two College Football Playoff wins to achieve rare back-to-back national championships. It would be an especially impressive accomplishment for a former walk-on. The No. 1 Bulldogs will play No. 4 Ohio State in the CFP Peach Bowl semifinal. No team has won consecutive championships in the first eight years with the CFP. Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron won back-to-back BCS national championships in the 2011 and 2012 seasons. Before that, the last quarterback to win two straight titles was Nebraska’s Tommie Frazier in 1994-95. Bennett says he understands why back-to-back titles are so rare.
Milton, Klubnik ready to take center stage at Orange Bowl
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Joe Milton has started three games for Tennessee. Cade Klubnik hasn’t started any for Clemson. They are the starting quarterbacks for Friday night’s Orange Bowl, where Tennessee takes on Clemson. The teams got here largely on the arms of others. Hendon Hooker led Tennessee most of the way before a season-ending injury, and DJ Uiagalelei was Clemson’s quarterback until Klubnik took over in the Atlantic Coast Conference title game and never looked back. And for both Milton and Klubnik, the final game of their 2022 season could become a springboard for them entering 2023.
